Trump Commented On Zelensky's Peace Plan

The U.S. president has described himself as the ultimate arbiter of future agreements.

US President Donald Trump has said that the final decision on any peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia depends solely on him. Specifically, the comment came ahead of a Sunday meeting in Florida with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who will bring a new 20-point plan to settle the war.

Trump told Politico in an exclusive interview that he views himself as the ultimate arbiter of future agreements. True, the American leader expressed skepticism about the Ukrainian president's proposals.

"He doesn't have anything until I approve. So we'll see what he has," Trump said.

At the same time, he expressed confidence that the meeting would be productive: "I think he'll be fine. I think he'll be fine with [Vladimir] Putin," Trump added, noting that he plans to hold talks with the Russian leader in the near future.

Besides security issues, management of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and control over Donbass territories claimed by Moscow will be on the meeting's agenda. Zelensky's plan, which Ukrainian officials have positioned as a demonstration of readiness for compromise without concessions to territorial integrity, has yet to receive a public response from Washington.

The Ukrainian side's proposal for a demilitarized zone envisages a mandatory withdrawal of Russian troops from a certain part of the Donetsk region. At the same time, Moscow has shown no willingness to agree to any concessions other than full control over the region, underscoring the gap between the two sides' positions.

Trump also emphasized the pressure on the Russian economy as a factor in influencing the negotiation process: "Their economy is in a difficult state, very difficult state."

Trump will also host Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in Florida this weekend, who will brief the US president on threats from Iran. The president emphasized that visits by world leaders show "respect for the United States" and reinforce the importance of negotiations at the global level.
