Thailand and Cambodia have agreed on a ceasefire in talks that is expected to take effect as early as today, December 27.

After three days of tense negotiations at Ban Pakkad immigration point in Pong Nam Ron district of Chanthaburi province, the secretariats of the Thai and Cambodian General Border Committees have agreed on the terms of an initial ceasefire, according to media reports.

A source close to the Thai government secretariat said the initial ceasefire would be monitored for 72 hours and any further ceasefire agreement would have to be approved by the National Security Councils.

Cambodia-Thailand Conflict

Another armed conflict between Cambodia and Thailand began on December 9 amid mutual accusations of ceasefire violations. The verbal confrontation quickly escalated into artillery shelling and air strikes from both sides.

Thailand accused Cambodia of shelling civilian areas, Cambodia of using Thai fighter jets to bomb border provinces. More than 86 people were killed and hundreds of thousands of civilians were displaced.

Afterward, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Bangkok and Phnom Penh to immediately cease hostilities and return to implementing agreements, but the call went unanswered.

The fighting continued from December 10 to 12. Amid the escalation, Thailand announced the dissolution of parliament.

Subsequently, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had held a telephone conversation with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, as a result of which he allegedly managed to reconcile the two states again.
