How does it work?

Poland has developed a STRATUS system capable of instantly disabling enemy drones. The development by the Gdansk Polytechnic University uses powerful electromagnetic pulses to disrupt or destroy the electronic components of UAVs.

The invention of Polish scientists is predicted to overturn the existing view of air defense and change the way critical infrastructure and other important facilities are protected. Details were reported by Polish broadcaster TVP.

What is known about the invention of Polish scientists

According to the report, Polish scientists have developed an electromagnetic system that can instantly disable enemy drones.

"The system, known as STRATUS, was created by a team from Gdansk Polytechnic University and uses powerful electromagnetic pulses to disrupt or destroy electronic components of drones," the authors of the material explained.

"Invisible shield": Poland has developed a system that can instantly disable enemy drones

Drone countermeasures are usually used to fire or interceptors that destroy enemy UAVs with explosions. An invention by Polish scientists could overturn the conventional view of anti-drone defenses.

"STRATUS uses short, high-intensity electromagnetic pulses that can neutralize a drone almost instantly without causing physical explosions. Researchers say this makes the system particularly suitable for use near critical infrastructure such as airports, power plants, ports, and public event venues where traditional methods may pose additional risks," TVP explained.

The system is based on an advanced electromagnetic effector that can generate extremely strong but precisely targeted pulses. According to the developers, while working on the system, they had to find a solution to a major engineering problem. It was not the creation of the pulse itself, but the control of extreme voltages and power density, which was necessary to ensure safe operation of the system.

"The researchers compared the system to an 'invisible shield' because it electronically disables drones rather than shooting them down," said the journalists, who themselves dubbed the invention a "monster" in the fight against UAVs.

Now the new technology has already been tested in laboratory and controlled conditions - and the tests were successful.

The newest system has not yet been introduced into operational activities in Poland.

It is known that the state-owned Polish National Research and Development Center has allocated funding of about 5 million euros for the development of STRATUS.
