According to police, the helicopter crashed Wednesday evening on one of the most popular tourist routes. The flight was part of a rescue operation to evacuate people from the mountain.
Among those who did not survive were two foreigners who were being transported as part of a medical evacuation. Also on board were a local doctor, a guide and a pilot.
The accident occurred between Barafu camp and Mt. Kibo at an altitude of more than 4,000 meters.
Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Simon Maigwa told reporters that the aircraft belonged to Kilimanjaro Aviation, a company that provides, among other things, air ambulance services. Representatives of the company have not yet commented.
