Media: During The Talks In Miami, The U.S. Gave Russia One Message

The main disagreements between Ukraine and the Russian Federation remain unchanged.
In Miami, closed-door talks between U.S. and Russian officials made no visible progress on ending Russia's war against Ukraine. However, U.S. negotiators handed Russia what Kyiv Post sources described as a list of additional questions and expectations, making it clear that the United States considers the next step to be Moscow's responsibility.
It is known that the talks were attended by the Russian dictator's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev and a US delegation led by Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff, as well as the US president's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The publication's sources familiar with the talks described the US position as resolute but restrained.
"These were not talks in which Washington bargained with itself," the interlocutor said.
He added that "although there was no breakthrough on Saturday," the US side "explained to the Russians where things are now after recent discussions with the Ukrainians and actually said: "Here's what still doesn't add up. Come back tomorrow with answers."
According to officials familiar with the current state of the talks, the main disagreements remain unchanged: Russia's expansive territorial demands and Ukraine's insistence on ironclad security guarantees from the United States.
This means that Russia is unwilling to give up claims to territories it has failed to fully seize, while Kiev assures it will not cede land that was seized by the occupiers after the 2022 invasion.
"There is an alignment between Washington and Kiev that did not exist a few weeks ago. But that alignment has not led to changes in Moscow's position," a third Western official told me.
The talks are due to continue today, December 21. U.S. officials are expected to issue an official statement after the meetings conclude, possibly signaling publicly for the first time whether Russia is ready for more serious talks.
"This was always positioned as a working level. And it has remained that way. What matters now is whether Russia will come back with something new - or just come back," one Western official added.
