Lithuanian prime minister to discuss smuggled weather probes with John Cole.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė plans to meet with U.S. Special Envoy to Belarus John Cole to discuss the problem of meteoprobes flying into the country. This was reported by LRT.

The situation with weather probes was discussed by the prime minister with the opposition factions of the Seimas. Ruginenė said that technologies for shooting down weather probes will be tested in February, but in the meantime air traffic over Vilnius is likely to be disrupted.

"We have been facing this problem for not two months - the balloons started arriving at the beginning of 2024. That means we've had this phenomenon for two years. And it means that algorithms should have been developed long ago, but when our government came in, there were no algorithms. Yes, we chose to protect the airport because every balloon flying towards the airport poses a huge threat to civilian passengers. We chose not to risk their lives. That is why there are partial closures of the airport," Ruginenė explained.

Premier recalled that the Ministry of Economy and Innovation held a competition for technologies capable of affecting weather balloons, three winners were announced, and testing of the technologies will begin in February. At the same time, testing of new technologies, according to her, is ongoing, and the army is open to all proposals.

Inga Ruginenė emphasized that all Lithuanian steps are coordinated with the Americans, so Lithuania is not acting alone. And the Prime Minister intends to meet with the future U.S. Special Envoy to Belarus John Cole to discuss the problem of weather probes.

We recall that on November 10, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kastutis Budrys met with John Cole and discussed the problem of hybrid attacks of Belarus against Lithuania. He urged the U.S. to increase pressure on the official Minsk and continue to tighten sanctions.
