There is a threat of chemical pollution in Togliatti.

Russia has complained about the Ukrainian Defense Forces' attack on Togliatti in the Samara region. A massive fire broke out at the Togliattiazot chemical plant after explosions sounded in the city, and there is a threat of chemical pollution, OBOZ.UA reported.

This plant produces up to 10% of the world's ammonia. The attack was reported by the Russian independent publication ASTRA.

What is known

The explosions in Togliatti sounded closer to the morning of Friday, December 19.

"The Togliattiazot (TOAZ) plant is under attack and on fire in Togliatti, local residents report. The road to the plant is blocked," the report noted.

The Telegram channel Exilenova+ also confirms the attack.

"Local residents report a drone attack at PJSC Togliattiazot, firefighters are heading there," the public wrote at 05:28 am Kiev time.

According to Supernova+, at least six explosions were heard at the plant. Given the production profile of the plant, there is a possibility of chemical contamination - which, however, some Russian sources strenuously deny.

The Togliattiazot chemical company is one of the world's top ten ammonia producers. It is controlled by Uralchem Holding.

The main products are ammonia, urea (urea), methanol and other nitrogen chemicals. The projected ammonia capacity is about 3 million tons per year, which makes the enterprise strategically important for the Russian chemical industry and fertilizer exports.

Togliattiazot produces, according to various estimates, from 8% to 10% of the world's ammonia. In the Russian market of mineral fertilizers the company's share was 19%

The company is also among the top ten Russian companies in terms of sales in the chemical and petrochemical industry. Exports account for about 85% of the total volume of products manufactured.
