The sentence was handed down on December 18.
Belarusian Sergei Eremeev, accused in Russia of committing terrorist attacks on November 29 and 30, 2023 on the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM), was sentenced to 22 years in prison. This was reported by "Zerkalo" with reference to Russia's 2nd Eastern District Military Court.
Yeremeyev was sentenced on December 18. The man was accused of "participation in a terrorist community, committing terrorist acts, undergoing training to carry out terrorist activities, illegal smuggling of explosive devices and their storage."
According to the investigation, in November 2023, Yeremeev secretly transported explosive devices across the Russian state border in his car and arrived in Buryatia. Then, with the purpose of committing a "terrorist act", at night on one of the sections of the East Siberian railroad, as well as on the trains following it, he installed explosive devices and activated remote controls.
The court ruled that as a result of the detonation of the explosive devices installed by Yeremeyev, the victims suffered property damage related to the destruction and damage to tank cars and equipment on the railroad worth more than 100,000,000 Russian rubles ($1.2 million), as well as other grave consequences in the form of disruption of the operation of a federal transportation highway.
"The court, based on the totality of the crimes, sentenced Yeremeev to 22 years' imprisonment, with the first 5 years to be served in prison and the remainder of the sentence in a strict regime penal colony, with a fine of 1,000,000 rubles. The vehicle belonging to Yeremeev was confiscated. The court also satisfied the civil claims of the victims in compensation for the damage caused to Yeremeev for a total of more than 60,000,000 rubles (744 thousand dollars), which it was decided to recover from the convict," the court said in its verdict.
The verdict has not entered into legal force.
