Since Tuesday, the Lithuanian police have been conducting a serious operation, 80 searches have been conducted, 21 people have been detained. This time the police are looking for organizers of cigarette smuggling from Belarus.

The source Delfi in the morning reported that the searches are being conducted at people who have long been suspected of organizing smuggling.

"These people drove luxury cars, built large houses. No one understood where they got such money from," the source pointed out.

Deputy Police Commissioner General Marius Draudvila told a news conference that police were checking available information about the smugglers on Tuesday.

The deputy commissioner general said 21 people have been detained, many of them long known to police because they have committed crimes related to smuggled cigarettes.

More than 140 officers, including members of the Aras anti-terrorism squad, were involved in the operation and searches, 15min.lt reported. In addition to smuggling, they are suspected of assisting a foreign state in activities against Lithuania.
