Ukrainian Navy Reveals How It Managed To Blow Up Russian Submarine

The surgery was complex and multi-layered.

The defeat of the Russian 636.3 class submarine Varshavyanka was the result of a complex operation by the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The boat felt safe in the port of Novorossiysk. This was stated by the speaker of the Ukrainian Navy Dmitry Pletenchuk.

"This is already the second boat, that is, they have already set such an anti-record. And accordingly there are two more such submarines and one submarine that is not a carrier of cruise missiles. In total, the Russians once had six of them in the Black Sea," he said.

The first submarine "Rostov-on-Don" Ukraine hit back in 2024. Pletenchuk noted that it was the first combat loss of a submarine in the world since World War II.

The naval spokesman noted that the defeat of the 636.3 Varshavyanka class boat was an extremely difficult task because of the high level of defense of the base in Novorossiysk. He said Russia has recently kept its ships and submarines away from the Black Sea because of the high risk of defeat.

"That is, in this operation, which has many layers, from the development of the means of defeat itself to planning, with the exclusion of information leaks, to conduct such an event is a complex and quite complicated affair," Pletenchuk emphasized.

He also added that navigation for ships of this class in the off-season is particularly difficult. Boats are forced to change their anchorage or leave the base to avoid being hit.

"They have to stay there and in case of some danger change their anchorage. That is, to move ships or leave the base in order not to get hit. And here, as you can see, they did not feel any danger," Pletenchuk said.
