What is known about the crash
On Tuesday, an Il-76 military transport plane crashed in eastern Sudan, near the city of Port Sudan. The aircraft crashed during a landing approach at Osman Digna airbase.
Local authorities said the crash was caused by a technical fault that led to a sudden loss of altitude and the subsequent explosion of the plane.
Media, particularly Al Arabiya, reported that members of the Sudanese army were on board. Among the dead are Amir Bakri Muhammad Al-Hassan, a pioneer of aviation navigation, and Technical Lieutenant Tarik Al-Toum Abdullah Yacoub.

How many military personnel were on board, the Sudanese army does not specify, and official data on the total number of casualties has not yet been released. The two military sources who confirmed the crew's deaths provided the information on condition of anonymity.
The Il-76 is a Soviet-designed heavy transport aircraft that was used in Sudan for many years as a key vehicle for transporting cargo and personnel, including in areas of active combat. It was often used for logistics between torn fronts.
The crash occurred against the backdrop of one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Since April 2023, Sudan has remained mired in an armed standoff between the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF). The power struggle has claimed tens of thousands of lives, and some 12 million people have been displaced from their homes. Millions more are in critical need of humanitarian aid as fighting continues in different regions of the country.
