This will affect Belarusians as well.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has introduced new rules for consulates and embassies under which visas will not be issued for "special" reasons.
This is reported by CBS News.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has instructed consular and embassy officials not to issue visas to elderly immigrants and those with certain medical conditions, including diabetes and obesity.
According to a State Department telegram sent overseas, such individuals could be considered a potential "societal burden" because of possible health problems or age restrictions.
Expanded list of medical conditions
The new guidance lists conditions that could affect visa decisions: cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, cancer, diabetes, metabolic disorders, neurological and mental disorders.
Additional factors mentioned include obesity, which can trigger asthma, sleep apnea and high blood pressure.
All of these conditions can require lengthy and expensive treatment, which U.S. authorities say should be paid for without involving U.S. government resources.
Powers of visa officers
The new guidelines significantly expand the ability of visa officers to assess applicants.
They are tasked with determining whether an applicant has the means to pay for medical care and making a decision on whether to issue a visa based on that.
Experts note that such rules could make it more difficult for a significant portion of the elderly and those with chronic illnesses to enter the United States.
