Because of U.S. sanctions.

Russian oil giant Lukoil is to stop working in Moldova from November 21 due to the US sanctions and the refusal of the US Treasury Department to approve the sale of Lukoil assets to the Gunvor trader. This was announced by the republic's Energy Minister Dorin Jungietu, writes The Moscow Times.

According to him, Lukoil will not be able to supply gasoline, diesel and kerosene to gas stations it owns in the country.

"Lukoil will be unable to carry out its activities," Jungietu explained in a Facebook post. The minister noted that Moldova's Investment Review Board proposed to buy out the company's terminal at the Chisinau airport to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the aviation hub. A deadline of November 17 has been set for making a decision on the deal.

Jungietu stressed that Chisinau joins the US sanctions against the Russian oil company, but asks the US for temporary permission to continue its operations "so as not to disrupt the supply of oil resources to Moldova and not to affect people's daily lives."

Sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft were imposed by Washington on October 22 in response to Russia's continued war in Ukraine. The U.S. Finance Ministry gave the companies' counterparties one month to stop cooperating.
