Former England captain Sir David Beckham has been officially knighted for services to soccer and British society, writes The BBC.

King Charles III knighted Beckham during a ceremony in Berkshire on Tuesday. His name was included in the official list of people who received honors to mark the king's birthday.

The former England soccer captain appeared at Windsor Castle in a suit sewn from patterns made by his wife Victoria. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to fashion in 2017.

"[King Charles] was very impressed with my costume," Beckham revealed.

He admitted he was "more than proud" because of the knighthood initiation. "People know how patriotic I am - I love my country. I've always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I've been fortunate enough to travel all over the world, and all people only want to talk to me about our monarchy. And I'm proud of that," said the famous soccer player.

50-year-old David Beckham is one of Britain's most decorated footballers and a major soccer star of his generation. From 1996 to 2009, he played in the England national team: he took the field 115 times and scored 17 goals, participated in three World Cups for England, as well as two European Championships. For six years - from 2000 to 2006 - he was captain of the national team.

Beckham played 11 years for United before moving to Real Madrid for 25 million pounds in 2003.

He played four years in the Spanish capital before leaving for the United States, where he played for the Los Angeles Galaxy. While in Los Angeles, he played twice on loan at AC Milan before finishing his career at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

Since 2005, he has been involved with the humanitarian organization Unicef.

In 2003, Beckham was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, receiving it from Queen Elizabeth II. When she died in 2022, he stood in line at her coffin for more than 12 hours.

In 2024, Beckham was appointed an ambassador for the King's Fund, which offers educational courses for students.

With former Manchester United and England teammate Gary Neville, Beckham owns League Two soccer club Salford City. He is also co-owner of American club Inter Miami.
