Journalists told us what it means.
The US Army has begun modernizing the Roosevelt Roads naval base in the Caribbean, which was closed 20 years ago. This is reported by Reuters with reference to satellite images. The footage shows workers clearing and repaving taxiways leading to the runway.
At the same time, the U.S. is building and renovating facilities at civilian airports in Puerto Rico and St. Croix, about 800 kilometers from Venezuela.
According to Reuters, the work could indicate preparations for possible operations in Venezuela. Three U.S. military officials and three maritime experts told the agency that Washington's actions are likely aimed at pressuring the Venezuelan leadership and intimidating the Nicolas Maduro regime.
Reuters notes that this is the largest U.S. military buildup in the region since Operation Democracy Support in 1994. Back then, Washington sent two aircraft carriers and more than 20,000 military personnel to Haiti to return legitimate President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to power.
Since early September, the US has been conducting operations against ships in the Caribbean Sea that US intelligence says are carrying drugs. US President Donald Trump accuses Maduro of facilitating the global drug trade.
Despite Trump's public statements that he is not planning a military attack on Venezuela, media reports claim that the White House has already coordinated the relevant plans for the operation.
