Power has passed to the military.
Guinea-Bissau's military has announced that power in the country has passed under their control, Africaguinee reports. President Umaru Sisoku Embalo confirmed the coup d'état and said he was under arrest at the General Staff.
Afterward, a group of officers appeared on television and said they had suspended the electoral process and would run the country until further notice.
The military also announced the creation of a "Supreme Military Command for the Restoration of Order" and called on the population to remain calm.
In addition, these officers announced the closure of the country's borders, according to Military Forces.
On Nov. 23, Guinea-Bissau held presidential and parliamentary elections. Both Oumaro Sissoko Embalo and his main rival, opposition candidate Fernando Dias, claimed victory in the presidential election.
Official election results were scheduled to be announced by Guinea-Bissau's electoral commission on Thursday, November 27.
Before that, Sissoko Embalo, who became president in early 2020, twice dissolved the parliament, where the opposition won the majority, and appointed and then postponed new elections.
Remember, on May 7, 2025, Umaru Sissoku Embalo flew to Minsk and met with Alexander Lukashenko. The latter said that Belarus was ready to supply Guinea-Bissau with a wide range of necessary products, including food, clothing, footwear, industrial goods.
