The designer of Topol and Iskander launch systems Valerian Sobolev died in Volgograd at the age of 87. This is reported by RIA "Novosti" with reference to a friend of the designer's family.
Valerian Sobolev was born in 1938 in Stalingrad (now - Volgograd). He graduated from the Stalingrad Mechanical Institute, later worked at the Volgograd Tractor Plant, later at the Barrikady Drilling Equipment Plant, where he held positions from engineer to chief designer. In the early 1990s, he established the Titan Central Design Bureau, and at the same time was in the civil service as Deputy Head of the Volgograd Region Administration. From the mid-90s he worked in scientific-engineering and manufacturing companies.
The designer's developments include launchers of missile systems with intercontinental ballistic missiles "Temp-2S", "Pioneer" and modifications. Valerian Sobolev - Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, author of more than 100 scientific works and holder of numerous invention certificates. He is a laureate of the USSR State Prize and the Lenin Prize, and was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
