Oleh Bilokolos: Security Guarantees Are A Key Point For Ukraine

A clear mechanism for protection is needed, not vague language.

The administration of Donald Trump substantially rewrote its peace plan after Kiev's harsh reaction: the demands to reduce the AFU, grant amnesty to the occupiers and actually surrender Donbass have disappeared from the document.

How can we assess these changes in Trump's plan and what do they mean for Ukraine? About this site Charter97.org talked to the director of the Center for National Resilience Studies in Kiev, ex-advisor of the Ukrainian Embassy in Canada and Kenya Oleh Belokolos:

- First of all, frankly speaking, it's not clear whose plan it was. Was it a Russian plan, was it a Trump plan, was it some kind of Russian-American plan originally? I mean, it's hard for us to talk here and call it. I wouldn't even call it a Trump plan - I think that's a bit of a misnomer. And, as far as I understand, our American partners are also denying that it was any kind of their plan or even a joint plan. But nonetheless, yes, it was rewritten. There was a joint Ukrainian-American statement on this plan, and as far as I understand, work on the text continues today. The points that have been changed are indeed essential, but I personally would like to know: are there any points on security guarantees - so-called security guarantees? What exactly is included there, what are we talking about? What security guarantees will be given to Ukraine in case we even agree to some plan? This, I think, is the most important and essential point in all these initiatives.

- How will the amended plan affect Russia's position? Is it possible that it will stop further negotiations altogether?

- Well, this cannot be ruled out. Russia is preparing for further war. It is not just gathering resources - it has already budgeted large military expenditures for next year, and measures are being taken to increase the size of the army. That is, from the point of view of their logic, their understanding, they are ready for any development of events. And, most likely, if they do not like the new version - and this cannot be ruled out, moreover, there is a high probability that they will not really like this plan in its updated form - they will continue military actions. Any difficulties that are present in the Russian economy today will not be taken into account by them: they will be subordinated to their main goal - to destroy Ukraine in its current understanding as a really independent democratic country and to create some kind of colony, semi-colony, satellite. There they have different media projects, but naturally, none of them suits Ukraine, as well as all Ukrainians.
