US Congress Prepares To Tighten Sanctions Against Russia

  • 22.11.2025, 9:51

Signature gathering has begun to get on the ballot.

U.S. House Republican Brian Fitzpatrick has begun collecting signatures to bring a bill to a vote on enhanced sanctions against Russia.

He announced the news in a X social media post.

Fitzpatrick said the intensified efforts come amid a report by The Wall Street Journal that U.S. President Donald Trump is allegedly demanding that Ukraine agree to a "peace plan" by Nov. 27.

"Clarification: the United States wants an answer from Russia on an unconditional withdrawal from Ukraine by Thursday. This Russian propaganda must be rejected and ignored as absurd nonsense. Peace is now only possible through force, not appeasement," the congressman wrote.

He also said that a group of House members had informed the leadership to begin collecting signatures on a so-called petition to force the bill to the floor, which would put a package of tough sanctions against Russia to a vote.

The petition mechanism allows the bill to be brought to the floor without leadership support if 218 congressmen sign it.

Republican leaders in the House and Senate have refrained from voting on the sanctions bill for months, waiting for a signal from Donald Trump.

Reminder, the day before Donald Trump said he would soon decide on "powerful sanctions" against Russia that would be stronger than any other he has ever announced.
