German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Friday.

He wrote about it on X.

Merz said he "discussed a peace plan for Ukraine with US President Donald Trump during a constructive and confidential telephone conversation."

"We agreed on the next steps at the level of advisers. I will now inform the European partners about this," he added.

The European Union heads of state attending the G20 summit in South Africa will hold a separate meeting on Saturday on the war in Ukraine.
