Because of the water shortage.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sees the need to move the capital from Tehran due to overcrowding in the metropolis and water shortages. This was reported by IRNA.
"We have no choice. This is a necessity," Pezeshkian emphasized.
The head of state explained that if Tehran's population continues to grow, it will be impossible to provide water to all residents. Pezeshkian also noted the problem of water shortage for some regions.
In the fall of 2025, almost half of the country - 15 out of 31 provinces - had no rain. Rainfall levels have been recorded as unprecedentedly low, approaching the lowest in the last hundred years. Iran has seen a steady decline in rainfall over the past five years. According to local weather services, Tehran has received 40% less than normal rainfall this year. Due to the water shortage, Iranian authorities have introduced nighttime water cuts. In Iran's second largest city, Mashhad, water reserves in the four dams supplying the city fell to 3% in early November.
