The US president said he was not satisfied with Mexico City's fight against drug cartels.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Nov. 17 that he is ready to launch strikes on Mexican territory if it will help stop drug trafficking. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, he said he was not against such operations.
Trump emphasized that the US should "do everything to stop drugs." He clarified that he has been communicating with Mexican officials but is not happy with Mexico City's handling of the cartels, saying, "They know how I look at it."
The White House chief cited the example of recent operations in the Caribbean and the Pacific. He said strikes on sea routes have nearly cut off the flow of drugs by water. The president claims that each boat destroyed "saves 25,000 American lives." Now he's allowing similar actions on land.
"I looked at Mexico City...big problems. I didn't say I was already doing it, but I would be proud to do it, we would save millions," he said.
As Charter97.org wrote, on Nov. 14, the U.S. president ordered the launch of a operation against drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere. The Department of War has already begun to execute it.
