Lithuanian Media Told When The Border With Belarus Would Be Opened

Negotiations will take place as early as today.

Lithuanian portal 15min.lt, relying on its sources, reported that the border with Belarus may be opened this week.

According to its sources, the government may make a decision after the talks scheduled for November 18.

"I can't confirm that the border with Belarus will be opened this week. The decision will be made taking into account the actions of the Belarusian authorities and the situation with the weather probes. If it is seen that the situation allows it, the border may open earlier than planned," Ignas-Algirdas Dobrovolskis, an adviser to Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė, told Delfi.

Senior Advisor to the President of Lithuania Deividas Matulionis specified on Monday, November 17, in turn, that a technical meeting with the Belarusian side should be held on Tuesday to discuss the Lithuanian tractor-trailers stuck in the neighboring country.

According to him, the Lithuanian side sees no need for contacts between the foreign ministers, it's necessary to first get the results of the technical meeting.

"There is a specific problem, it must be solved, when it's solved, I'm sure the checkpoints will be opened," Matulionis said.

"Everything depends on the reaction of the other side, whether the other side is ready to participate in solving a specific problem, and the problem is clear - it's weather probes, posing a threat to the safety of air traffic. We understand that Lithuania has to do a lot on its part, but if the weather probes fly, we'll be in the same situation," he concluded.

We recall that on October 30, the Lithuanian government adopted decision to close checkpoints Miadininkai (Kamenny Log) and Shalchinkai (Beniakoni) on the border with Belarus for a month. According to the LRT TV channel, the restrictions will be in force until 24:00 on November 30, with the possibility of their extension.
