Vilnius claimed "serious problems".

Lithuanian presidential adviser Deividas Matulionis said that Belarus' intention to construct a third power unit at the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovka under the border with Lithuania will create an even more serious problem.

The adviser's statement leads LRT.

Matulionis reminded that the Lithuanian side was previously dissatisfied with Belarus' plans to build the first and second power units of the nuclear power plant.

"And the third power unit - we will have an even more serious problem. We'll see how to react here, but as of today, there seems to be a decision on what is planned to be built. We will have to discuss this issue in more detail," he added.

The BelTA state agency reported on Belarus' plans to build a third power unit at the nuclear power plant in Astravets on November 14.

The power plant in the town of Astravets in western Grodno Region, is 15 km from the border with Lithuania and has been criticized for safety issues, primarily by neighboring countries and international organizations.

The first unit was launched in 2020, while the second was connected to the Belarusian power grid in 2023. The plant was built by Russian state company Rosatom and the project was financed by Moscow.

Earlier in 2017, the Lithuanian Seimas legislated that the Belarusian nuclear power plant was dangerous and posed a threat to national security, the environment and human health. The three Baltic states eventually agreed to boycott electricity from BelNPP when they were still disconnected from Belarus' power grid.
