Nicolas Maduro may be allowed to flee to Russian Federation.
US administration officials are discussing possible options on where to send Venezuela's dictator Nicolas Maduro and his closest associates into exile, Politico reported, citing administration officials.
The discussion involves Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan and Cuba, among others.
According to a U.S. official and two other sources familiar with the discussions, one idea President Donald Trump's aides are mulling is to ensure Maduro and his cronies can safely travel to another country.
Other aides suggest Maduro should be arrested and put on trial in the United States, said a third source familiar with the talks.
Some also hope that threats of military action by the United States as part of the fight against drug cartels will cause chaos and lead to Maduro losing power.
Also being discussed is the possibility of bringing in private security firms from third countries. The sources said the firms would serve as initial protection for the leadership that would replace Maduro.
According to the agency, several people are discussing the topic in various U.S. agencies: the State Department, the Energy Department, the Treasury Department, the Justice Department, the Defense Department, and others. Some are reaching out to former U.S. officials and independent analysts.
Another source told Politico that the U.S. is in touch not only with the opposition in Venezuela, but also with others inside the country.
