Trump has endorsed the deal.

The administration of US President Donald Trump and the US State Department have tentatively agreed on the sale of up to 173 air defense missiles to Germany, Bloomberg reported (translated by Unian).

A related equipment worth about $3.5 billion will also be sold.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) released a statement approving the sale of Standard Missile 6 Block I and Standard Missile 2 Block IIIC missiles manufactured by RTX. According to the statement, the missiles will help Germany respond to "current and future threats by providing integrated air and missile defense capabilities."

"The proposed agreement will further U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a NATO ally that drives political stability and economic progress in Europe," the statement said.

The missile purchase will also make it easier for German forces to coordinate with U.S. Army and German authorities are yet to agree on the final terms of the contract with the manufacturers. However, the sale still has to be approved by the U.S. Congress

The missiles will be used, among other things, on F127 frigates with the Aegis missile defense system. The agency has also provided Germany with all the necessary certification, notifying Congress.
