Iran Detains Foreign Oil Tanker Off UAE Coasts

30,000 tons of petrochemicals were found aboard the ship.

Iran's armed forces said they have detained a foreign tanker off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. The Talara was found to have 30,000 tons of petrochemical products on board, and the tanker was ordered by the judiciary to check for possible violations, writes Bild.

The authorities took this measure under "legitimate authority to protect national interests." It is not specified what exactly was meant: details are to be released after the cargo and vessel inspection.

It is noteworthy that off the UAE coast the tanker changed course towards Iran rather suddenly, and the ship's management company said it immediately lost contact with Talara. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Office (UKMTO) does not rule out that the incident may have a political motive.

The Iranian army has previously detained foreign tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on several occasions for political reasons: for example, in 2021, Tehran used the detention of a South Korean tanker as pressure to release frozen assets in Seoul.
