Irina Filatova said that the Russian Federation loses trillions of rubles because of this.

Obesity is not only a serious disease, but also a "catastrophically" large burden on the country's economy. In Russia, residents suffering from this disease take away 4% of GDP - this is trillion-dollar costs for treatment, sick leave and early disability, said Duma deputy Irina Filatova in the press center of NSN.

"According to estimates of the Ministry of Health and specialized analysts, losses from conditions associated with obesity may reach about 4% of GDP. That is, these are figures measured in trillions of rubles," the parliamentarian said.

She explained that it is not only about the cost of treating the disease - obesity also leads to early disability, reduces demographics by increasing premature mortality. All in all, it creates a great burden on the country's social system, Filatova explained. According to her, just because of the disability of overweight citizens, the state loses hundreds of billions of rubles, which undermines the competitiveness of the country's economy as a whole.

The deputy also cited calculations, according to which the disability of people with obesity, that is, with a body mass index above 30, leads to losses of up to 400 billion rubles.

"This is equivalent to 0.5% of GDP. These are catastrophic figures for the country's economy," the MP concluded.
