Polish Prime Minister Rejects Plans To Extradite Ukrainian Suspected Of Blowing Up Nord Streams

According to Donald Tusk, extraditing him to Berlin is not in Poland's national interest.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that the extradition of Ukrainian citizen Vladimir Zhuravlev, detained at Germany's request in the Nord Stream gas pipeline bombing case, is not in Poland's national interest.

As Polsat News reports, Tusk noted that the final decision on the fate of the detainee will be made by the court. At the same time, he said, the Polish government has a clear position on the issue.

"It is certainly not in Poland's interests to charge or extradite this citizen to another state. The decision will be made by the court," the Polish prime minister said.

Tusk said that "his role is not to find out why a Ukrainian citizen came to Poland again, despite the fact that he knew about the issuance of a European arrest warrant." At the same time, he noted that Poland's position had not changed.

"The problem for Europe, Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland is not that Nord Stream 2 was blown up, but that it was built. Russia, with the money of some European countries, German companies and Dutch companies, built Nord Stream-2 contrary to the most important interests of the whole Europe," the politician stressed.

A Warsaw court on October 6 extended for 40 days the arrest of Ukrainian Volodymyr Zhuravlev, whom the German prosecutor's office suspects of involvement in the explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

On October 6, protesters gathered in front of the court building in Poland, where the case of Volodymyr Zhuravlev was being considered. They demanded not to extradite the man to Germany.

The law firm defending the Ukrainian in court also collected signatures in his support. According to his lawyer, more than 2,000 signatures have already been collected.

Representatives of the man's defense said earlier that they would apply for measures not related to detention, in particular, bail.
