Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has chosen 64-year-old Sanae Takaichi as its new chairman. As "Kyodo" writes, Takaichi is likely to become Japan's prime minister later in October and the first woman to hold the post.
On Oct. 15, Takaichi's nomination for prime minister must be approved by Japan's parliament and she will become the first woman to head the Asian country's government.
Takaichi is 64. Her political biography includes the post of interior minister, which she held twice - from 2014 to 2017 and from 2019 to 2022. As Kyodo writes, she is known for her "tough views on security." The former interior minister is in favor, in particular, of revising the ninth article of the Japanese constitution of 1947, which proclaims the country's renunciation of militarism. She is also an advocate of strengthening the military.
