Hungary Blocked A Statement Against Lukashenko's Regime

Budapest prevented the European Union from condemning the launch of weather probes from Belarus.

Hungary is lobbying for the EU not to publish its assessment regarding the ballooning incident in Lithuania.

European Union efforts to agree on a common position on Belarus, from where a wave of balloons that was sent across the border into Lithuania forced planes to stay on the ground and led to border closures, remained fruitless for days after Hungary's attempts to soften the wording. This is according to Politico.

The bloc insisted on issuing a statement on behalf of all 27 member states after the balloon incursion, which Lithuania warned was a "hybrid warfare" tactic.

But a diplomat and two officials told Politico that Hungary is lobbying the EU not to publish its assessment that the balloon flights are an attempt to destabilize the bloc's countries.

"While it is hoped that Budapest will back down on the issue, the dispute has left the draft statement in limbo since it was circulated to member states on Tuesday morning, when Lithuania first used air defense measures against the wave of incursions," the publication added.
