Trump Has Sent Two U.S. Aircraft Carriers To China's Shores

Washington's actions signal the U.S. willingness to maintain military superiority.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is increasing the US military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Two US Navy aircraft carriers, USS Nimitz and USS George Washington, have been deployed to waters off China. A US 7th Fleet spokesman said the ships were conducting "routine operations" within the fleet's area of responsibility, writes The National Interest (translated by Charter97.org).

The decision to move the carriers coincided with rising tensions between Washington and Beijing, especially amid China's demonstration of its new Fujian aircraft carrier, the first in the Chinese Navy to be equipped with catapults for launching airplanes. Experts believe that while the U.S. still far surpasses China in the number and capabilities of aircraft carriers, the development of China's fleet poses a growing threat to U.S. interests in the region.

USS Nimitz and USS George Washington belong to the Nimitz class, the largest type of aircraft carrier in the world until the USS Gerald R. Ford in 2017. Each ship is capable of carrying up to 60 aircraft - airplanes and helicopters. These ships are powered by nuclear reactors and are equipped with steam catapults to allow aircraft to take off from the short deck.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carriers are named after Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II. The US Navy has a total of 10 such aircraft carriers in service, built between the 1970s and 2000s.

According to the US media, the transfer of the ships may be related to the adjustment of the fleet's positions after the stabilization of the situation in the Middle East. Meanwhile, analysts note that Washington's actions signal the US readiness to maintain military superiority in the Pacific against the backdrop of China's strengthening.
