Locals said they "heard an explosion."
Norway has put its F-35 fighter jets in the air to intercept a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane. The incident occurred in the north of the country, over the Barents Sea, causing panic among locals who heard loud explosions and felt buildings vibrate.
According to Altaposten, at around 11:18 a.m., residents of the town of Alta heard two strong explosions, after which windows in the houses shook. It was later revealed that they were sonic booms caused by the overflight of Norwegian fighter jets that had taken off on an emergency interception mission.
"I can confirm that two F-35s were on a flight, the explosions occurred when they broke the sound barrier. I can't say more yet," said Norwegian Air Force spokesman Maj. Stjan Ren.
The country's Air Force Command later clarified that the fighter jets were alerted as part of a QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) mission - a quick reaction alert to intercept unidentified aerial targets.
