Trump's statement was reported by RBC-Ukraine by CBS News.

Trump said he still plans to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit later this month in South Korea.

The U.S. leader also pointed out that higher tariffs on China would take effect on Nov. 1 if the U.S. and Beijing fail to reach a deal. However, he expressed optimism about the prospects of reaching an agreement, saying China has been behaving very "respectfully" and paying "huge amounts" to the U.S. in tariffs.

The current tariffs on Chinese imports are 30 percent.
