Putin doesn't want to freeze the war along the front lines.
Russia's position regarding the suspension of the army on the current borders has not undergone any changes, Putin's spokesman Dmitri Peskov said on Monday, rejecting US President Donald Trump's proposal to freeze the war along the front lines.
"This topic has been repeatedly raised, raised with different nuances in the course of Russian-American contacts, and the Russian side has each time given an answer - and this answer is well known: the consistency of Russia's position does not change," Peskov was quoted as saying by Interfax.
Trump's statements that Russia could end hostilities while retaining the captured territories and only then begin discussing a peace deal, Peskov called "newspaper reports." "In general, there have been many statements to this effect," he added.
Remember, in his conversation with Trump, Putin reiterated his demand that Kiev surrender the entire territory of the Donetsk region, including the parts it still controls. According to The Washington Post's sources, in return Putin is willing to give up claims to the unoccupied lands of Zaporizhzhya and Kherson Oblast, which he has included within Russia's administrative boundaries. He also continues to demand Ukraine's neutrality, refusal to join NATO and downsizing of the army.
