The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing a new round of talks with the Kremlin. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead preparations for a future Budapest summit between Trump and Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin.
The news was welcomed in Kiev, as Rubio is known for his tough stance on Moscow. This is reported by The Washington Post.
What is known about the summit in Budapest
"Secretary of State Marco Rubio is the top administration official in charge of preparing for a future Budapest summit with Putin, which was welcomed by Kiev," the report said.
In contrast to US presidential special envoy Steve Whitkoff, who organized the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, Rubio shows no sympathy for the Kremlin. Whitkoff himself has repeatedly shown excessive "flexibility" in negotiations with the Russians - to the point that during Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's visit to the White House, he pressured the Ukrainian delegation to "cede" the Donetsk region to Russia.
Whitkoff argued that the region is "predominantly Russian-speaking," effectively repeating Kremlin talking points. Such statements have caused outrage among Ukrainian diplomats and concern in Washington.
But Rubio has taken a tough, principled stance. During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September, he clearly reiterated the American president's demand for an end to the killing and real steps to achieve long-term peace.
Rubio had earlier, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, emphasized that Russia's war against Ukraine was one of the most difficult challenges of our time. He said that President Trump's patience has limits and the United States is ready to impose new sanctions if Moscow continues its aggression.
In addition, Rubio addressed the Ukrainian people on Ukraine's Independence Day, reaffirming the United States' commitment to Ukraine's future as an independent nation.
Therefore, unlike previous attempts to "make peace" with the Kremlin, the Budapest summit organized by Marco Rubio may be Washington's first attempt to engage in dialogue with Russia without making concessions at the expense of Ukraine.
