Germany Has Found A Treasure Trove Of Raw Materials That Will Bring Billions Of Euros To The Country

This is a watershed moment for the auto industry.

Germany now has a chance to become an independent player in the international competition for raw materials - and less dependent on imports.

Neptune Energy says it has discovered a huge deposit of lithium in the Altmark region of Saxony-Anhalt. This could be a real game changer for the future of the German automotive industry, writes Bild.

Lithium is a key component of rechargeable batteries used, for example, in electric cars, smartphones and tablets.

Lithium mining could bring billions of euros to the German economy. Altmark contains 43 million tons of lithium carbonate equivalent, according to the company. It would be "one of the largest projected lithium deposits in the world."

The resource would not be extracted using traditional mining methods. Instead, thermal water would be brought from deep underground to the surface, and lithium would be extracted from it using a filter. The water will then be returned back underground.

According to the company's forecast, between 2025 and 2042, the project, if fully developed, could generate gross added value of 6.4 billion euros across Germany. In addition, up to 1,500 jobs could be created.

But the project is still at a very early stage. If everything goes according to plan, the commercial production phase should start in 2033.
