The indictment charges 18 counts.

Former White House National Security Adviser John Bolton has been indicted for mishandling classified material.

According to Fox News

Bolton has been charged with 18 counts: 8 counts of communicating national defense information and 10 counts of retaining national defense information.

"From approximately April 9, 2018 through at least August 22, 2025, Bolton abused his position as National Security Advisor by sharing more than one thousand pages of information about his daily activities, including national defense-related information that was classified to Secret/Top Secret level with two unauthorized individuals," the indictment reads.

The documents are said to have revealed intelligence about future attacks by an enemy group in another country; covert operations in a foreign country involving secret intergovernmental actions; secret sources and methods used to gather human intelligence information; and the like.

Bolton reportedly illegally stored written documents and notes related to national defense at his home in Montgomery County, Maryland.

In August, FBI agents searched Bolton's home. Phones, a laptop, computers, a hard drive and USB drives were seized.
