Venezuela To Close Embassy In Norway After Nobel Prize To Opposition Activist

The Maduro regime is holding a grudge.

The Venezuelan government announced the closure of its embassies in Norway and Australia and the opening of new diplomatic missions in Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe. The decision comes as part of a "strategic reallocation of resources" and restructuring of the diplomatic service, the Nicolas Maduro regime said in a statement seen by Reuters.

Consular services for Venezuelan citizens in Norway and Australia will be provided by other diplomatic missions, Caracas specified. The new embassies will open in what the statement called "fraternal countries, strategic allies in the anti-colonial struggle and resistance to hegemonic pressure."

Infobae, citing the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, reports that Oslo confirmed the closure of the embassy. "The Venezuelan embassy has informed us that it will close, but has not given any reasons," the Norwegian ministry said.

The decision, the agency notes, came amid rising tensions between Caracas and Washington and days after the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. U.S. President Donald Trump was also a contender for the award.
