The Russian submarine B-261 "Novorossiysk" surfaced off the coast of Brittany in northwestern France. A French Navy frigate has been deployed to monitor it.

NATO Naval Forces Command reported in X.

"A French Navy frigate is monitoring the Alliance's maritime approaches, recording the presence of a Russian submarine operating on the surface off the coast of Brittany. NATO stands ready to defend our Alliance by maintaining constant vigilance and maritime awareness across the Atlantic Ocean," the report said.

A Telegram channel "VChK-OGPU", the diesel-electric submarine was forced to surface off the coast of France due to a serious technical failure in the fuel system.

It is noted that the fuel began to flow directly into the hold, creating an explosive situation. The boat had neither the necessary spare parts nor specialists capable of fixing the malfunction. The crew was unable to cope with the accident on their own.

"Novorossiysk" is part of the 4th separate submarine brigade of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The boat was laid down in 2010 in St. Petersburg, launched in 2013, and joined the Russian Navy in 2014.
