Number Of First-Graders In Belarus Noticeably Decreases

Minus 13 thousand over the past three years.

On September 2, 2024, 1 million 70 thousand people will start studying in 2,655 secondary educational institutions, the Ministry of Education reports. According to Belstat, a year ago there were 2,872 general secondary education institutions and 1 million 90 thousand students.

The number of first-graders has been decreasing over the past three years, according to an analysis of official statistics conducted by Pozirk. This year, about 105 thousand first-graders will go to school, while last year there were 110 thousand, a year earlier — 115 thousand, and in 2021 — 118 thousand.

At the beginning of the last academic year (new data has not yet been published), 103.3 thousand teachers worked in secondary educational institutions. On average, there were 11 students per teacher in the country, 13 in urban schools, 6 in rural schools.
