Journalists managed to contact the son of the person who attacked the Prime Minister of Slovakia.
The attacker of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico used to be a writer, local TV channel Markiza reports. Aktuality.sk writes that the shooter has published several collections of works.
The attacker is a 71-year-old native of Levíce, Juraj Cintula. In his city he founded the literary club “Rainbow”.
According to Aktuality.sk, he previously worked for a private security company.
The portal contacted the shooter's son. He said that he had no idea why the attack occurred; the pensioner did not talk about his intentions. In response to a question about his father’s negative attitude towards Fico’s SMER (Direction — Social Democracy) party, the son only said that he did not vote for this party.
After the shooting, the attacker was detained. He was shooting from a short-barreled shotgun that he owned legally, the legality of which was confirmed by his son. Before opening fire, the attacker shouted to Fico: “Robo, come here.”
The attempt on Fico’s life took place near a cultural center in the city of Handlova, where a visiting meeting of the country’s government was taking place. From Handlova, the wounded PM was sent by helicopter to the nearby town of Banska Bystrica for surgery. They decided not to deliver him to Bratislava, which is more than 100 km from Handlova, due to the need to urgently provide assistance. Authorities reported that Fico's condition was life-threatening.
The publication Plus, citing a source, reported that the Prime Minister was wounded in the chest, stomach and arm, and up to five shots were fired.
