It wasn't drones.
The versions that the Russian Serpukhov ship could have been hit by a sea or air drone in Kaliningrad region are rather dubious. If it was indeed a Main Intelligence Directorate operation, it was carried out by means of sabotage. Military observer David Sharp said about this in an interview with "Focus".
According to him, it could be a manifestation of purely psychological warfare, because it is very difficult to carry out such a sabotage in such a place, purely technically. Besides, Kaliningrad region is an enclave, which is surrounded by NATO countries on land.
"We can be sure that the drone did not fly from Poland or Lithuania, but from the sea, of course, there is access," Sharp emphasises, "In order to carry out sabotage, it is necessary to have physical access to the ship, which means that we are talking about involving someone from the crew, which is a complex and risky operation".
However, it cannot be ruled out that the ship caught fire on its own, due to some technical problems, the expert said. Emergencies in the Russian navy happen quite often and it is a sin not to take advantage of such a case to carry out a psychological attack on the part of the MID.
Claims that the MID is behind the fire on the ship are quite favourable to Ukraine, because the Serpukhov is a carrier of Kalibr missiles, says the military observer. Plus, it's a relatively new combat vessel, and there aren't many of them in the Russian navy.
"It's a fairly small ship that can harass other armed forces because it's able to move through deep rivers," Sharp notes, "Although, as we see today, the navy is not the main sign of war in Ukraine, but little things like that are always nice".
