Belarus' Share In Africa's Potash Fertiliser Market Reduces To 3%

  • 4.08.2023, 11:20

Previously, every fifth tonne of potash fertilizers in the world was Belarusian.

The share of Belarus in the markets of potash fertilisers in Africa has decreased from 42% to 3% in 2022 due to the sanctions. This was stated by Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Valiantsin Rybakou, speaking at the open debate of the UN Security Council, BelTA informs.

The speaker notes that before the termination of Belarusian potash transit through the Baltic Sea ports, Belarus' share in the global trade in potash fertilisers was about 20%. Every fifth tonne of potash fertilizers in the world was Belarusian. He cited data that Belarus' share in Africa's potash fertiliser markets fell from 42% to 3% in 2022.

"According to our estimates based on FAO data, the almost complete disappearance of Belarus from the list of potash suppliers last year led to a 16% drop in grain yields in Africa," said Valiantsin Rybakou, adding that in 2023, supplies of Belarusian potash to Africa will be completely paralysed due to sanctions.

The speaker stressed that many countries of the continent were supplied exclusively with Belarusian fertilizers, while a number of other countries covered their need for fertilizers by 50% through supplies of Belarusian potash.

We remind you that Belaruskali's competitors predict a decline in exports of potash fertilizers from our country to 6 million tonnes compared to the pre-war level.
