Military Expert: Polish Piorun MANPADS Better Than American Stinger

Polish weapons are "smarter" than missiles from the US due to modernization.

The Polish Piorun man-portable air defence systems in service with the Ukrainian army perform better than the American Stinger. Polish military expert Konrad Muzyka told about it in an exclusive commentary for ZN.UA.

- Are Polish Piorun MANPADS really more effective against Russian aircraft than American Stinger? What is the reason for it?

- Unofficial data indicate that they are. The new generation Piorun is equipped with two photodiode sensors that operate in two electromagnetic radiations: near and middle infra-red. The signal is instantly digitised, making quick adjustments and analysing the heat source to distinguish between targets and decoys," Muzyka says.

The expert adds that target countermeasures, such as cooling or engine plume dissipation, are not effective against the Piorun. It is also difficult to stall. The Stinger, on the other hand, has an older generation guidance head, a smaller warhead and a shorter range.
