What was the reason?
Lithuania calls for the suspension of the Astravets nuclear power plant until all safety issues are resolved. A message about this appeared on the official website of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania sent a note to Belarus in which it called on our country to immediately resolve issues of environmental, nuclear and radiation safety of the Astravets NPP, as well as to comply with all international requirements and standards.
“The unsafe nuclear power plant in Astravets poses a great threat to the whole of Europe, so Lithuania urgently demands that the operation of its first and second power units be stopped until all safety issues are resolved,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry of the neighboring country also emphasized that by implementing this nuclear energy project, “Belarus continues to ignore the requirements of the international community,” which primarily concern the safety of people.
In 2023, this is not the first note that Lithuania sends to Belarus because of the nuclear power plant. In March, our neighbors were concerned that the second power unit of the station was being prepared for launch - they asked not to do this. Lithuania sent the next note in May, when two nuclear power plant units were already operating. And at the end of July there was another official call to turn off the power unit that had begun to operate, along with a statement about the “unacceptability of a selective approach to ensuring nuclear safety.”
