Polish Opposition Leaders Sign Coalition Agreement

It will allow the formation of a government in the future.

The leaders of three Polish opposition parties and coalitions signed a coalition agreement that will allow them to form a government in the future, RMF24 reports.

“On the eve of the anniversary of gaining independence, we can convey good news, filled with responsibility for our country. In a minute, we are ready to initial the text of the coalition agreement, which will be for us a collection of instructions and recommendations for our work after receiving such an opportunity from Mr. President,” said the head of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk.

Let us recall that the ruling Law and Justice party received the most votes in the parliamentary elections in Poland, but the number of parliamentary seats it received does not allow it to create a majority in the Sejm. 248 of the 460 seats collectively went to the Civic Coalition, the Third Road (PSL and Polska-2050) and the New Left.

After the elections, Polish President Andrzej Duda held meetings with leaders of parliamentary parties. Then he said that he had not heard from the opposition a statement that it had a coalition agreement. As a result, he entrusted the formation of the government to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, but this government has little chance of receiving the support of the Sejm.

The first meeting of the new composition of the Polish Sejm is due to take place on Monday.

Morawiecki has two weeks to form a government. Its composition must be approved by the Sejm. If the Sejm rejects Morawiecki's cabinet, then the right to nominate a candidate for the post of prime minister will be given to the majority in the lower house, which in the new convocation is represented by the Civic Coalition, the Third Road and the New Left. They intend to nominate Donald Tusk for the post of Prime Minister.
