The Country's Chief Infectious Disease Specialist: The Executioner Is a State of Mind

  • 16.08.2020, 16:57

People's doctor of Belarus made an appeal.

The official telegram-channel of the Ministry of Health published an appeal by the people's doctor of Belarus Ihar Karpau: "They ask me how I feel about beating people in prison? How do you feel about this? And how will any doctor or any human react to this? There must be investigative actions and tough court decisions for each case of this abomination!" writes tut.by.

In his address, the country's chief infectious disease specialist notes: he considers himself a non-public person and tries not to change this principle. But there are calls from all sides.

"I will not write about politics - much has already been said, I will say about the profession. This week has been even more stressful and tense. We have dedicated our whole life to the holy mission of saving people. Much is asked of us, but much is given to us by God and the same people. But there is something that is prohibited, and these prohibitions are accepted by society. Sometimes silently, sometimes loudly. In particular, a refusal to provide assistance to those in need.

They ask me how I feel about beating people in prison? How do you feel about this? And how will any doctor or any human react to this? There must be investigative actions and tough court decisions for each case of this abomination!

I have traveled to almost all prisons in the republic, providing care to HIV patients. In places where I was not, there were my colleagues and students. Are we ready to help those arrested now? A rhetorical question, this minute and at any level. This is what we are given as doctors, this is our happiness and mission!

My colleagues and I have decided not to go on vacation yet. But we are not able to polarize patients. They are all one for us - ours and foreign citizens who need help. Regardless of the political camp to which they belong. And they should get this help - despite all the polarization of opinions.

The executioner is a state of mind. There is a good phrase: "you don't have to be an executioner under any government." I will add, but you can be in a white coat - there are enough examples. You can't blame everyone indiscriminately. It is bitter to remember, but we, doctors, hear such accusations more often than others. The police are called upon to protect the peace of the citizens of any country and under any government. We all know and understand, despite all the tension, horror, and emotions, that most of these guys are normal people. But sadists should be identified and isolated, in this, in my opinion, everyone is interested in it!

And no one now requires sacrifice, as in the case of coronavirus infection, which still takes place (my traditional phrase "think about the elderly," this is by the way). Just remember that a white robe is a big deal.

And finally. Our consultant was in one of the hospitals in a small town. An elderly patient with an infectious pathology, to put it mildly, is neglected. I stumbled upon bewilderment - there were other priorities. Just like Bulgakov's in "The Dog's Heart": "I am tired of my matrona, I have suffered from flannel pants, now another time has come ... and the afterlife does not exist." It does, and times are always somewhat similar. I don't want to get into the details, I will quote from "Faust:: "In the beginning, there was a matter." And the fact that we are responsible for the health of all our citizens is a matter of our honor. All citizens! "

In addition to Professor Ihar Karpau, the letter was signed by the doctor of the highest category Maya Kazachenka, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases of BelMAPO, Yuri Horbich, Professor Dzmitry Danilau, Associate Professor Mikita Salavey, assistant Dzmitry Litvinchuk.

Ihar Karpau is the third people's doctor in the history of Belarus. He works as the head of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Belarusian
