Another Vitsebsk Mayor's Son Detained In Minsk

  • 13.10.2020, 8:18

His car has been crushed by chasteners in balaclavas.

On Monday, October 12, around 23.00, unknown persons wearing balaclavas, helmets and batons smashed glass in the car and detained the driver. It was Vadzimir Zarankin - the eldest son of Vitsebsk mayor Vadzim Zarankin. It should be noted that last week his youngest son, Filip, was released from the TDF in Zhodzina.

Readers reported to tut.by about the car with a broken glass of the passenger seat. According to them, the driver was pulled out of the car and the car with the ignition key was left in the parking lot.

Vadzimir Zaryankin is 32, he works at the U.S. Embassy in Minsk and is engaged in exchange programs. His brother Filip told the journalists about the detention.

- My brother was sitting in the car, which was parked in the upper parking lot near the "Riga" store (from the side of Leanid Biada Street - ed.). At some point, as I was told, about 15 law enforcement officers ran up to him from both sides, and broke glass from the passenger's side. Vadzimir was pulled out of the cabin, put face down on the ground, his hands were tied with plastic ties. He was not beaten up, though.

The eyewitnesses told Filip that when the law enforcers appeared near his brother's car, he tried to get out: backed up, but misjudged the distance and hit Daewoo, which was parked nearby.

- All this was seen by the Daewoo driver. When Vadzimir was detained and they were going to take him to the police station, the driver said that he would go with them to register the traffic accident. My brother gave him my phone number there and this driver called me and informed me about what had happened.

Filip does not know why the law enforcement officers were interested in his brother. He informed his father, lawyer and mass media about what had happened. He drove away the broken car to the parking lot.

We remind that Filip Zarankin - the youngest son of Vitsebsk mayor Vadzim Zarankin - spent 13 days in the detention center in Akrestsin Street and the TDF in Zhodzina. The court punished the young man with an administrative arrest for his participation in the march against Lukashenka's "inauguration" in Minsk on September 23. Filip claims, however, that he did not participate in the rally but was on his way home from work.
