The landmark decision was taken by the city council in September 1991.
On September 5, 1991, the Minsk City Council of People's Deputies decided to ask the authorities of Belarus to return the historical name Mensk to the city instead of the Polish name Minsk, adopted by the occupational Soviet government on July 29, 1939, the radabnr.org website reports.
Together with that the ancient coat of arms was returned to Minsk.
The return of the historical name was never approved by the Supreme Council of Belarus, and the proposal to appeal to the authorities of Belarus was abolished by the undemocratic "city council" in March 2001.
